    This course will enable you to think about technology in new ways, placing users at the very heart of digital design. You will gain a deep understanding of users' needs, and feed that understanding into the design of engaging user experiences.

    The MSc Human-Computer Interaction Design (HCID) course will provide you with an effective mix of theoretical and practical knowledge, a strong user-centred ethos, and the skills to become the users’ advocate when designing and evaluating interactive systems and services.

    Our graduates go into professional roles as user experience (UX) practitioners, predominantly as user researchers and UX designers. Our alumni are currently working at companies like Google, Microsoft, BBC, Nintendo, Accenture, Trainline, The British Library, and The National Archives.

    You’ll learn about designing technology and creating interactive systems that meet user needs and that are easy-to-use, engaging and useful.

    The course will help you to ensure that the technology and products you and others design meet the needs of the people using them.

    Master of Science (MSc)

    Duration:

    • Full-time: 12 months (15 months with internship)
    • Part-time: 28 months

    Modules:

    • 8 in total
    • Core modules: 7

    Full-time

    • A 12-month full-time option during which you attend all the taught modules during Semesters 1 and 2, and complete your Project within the 12-month period of the degree.
    • Teaching will be on 2-3 days per week, during the daytime (9:00-18:00).
    • Full-time students spend eight hours per week in lectures and four hours per week in seminars and tutorials.

    Part-time

    • A 28-month part-time option during which you attend half the modules in a first 12-month period, followed by the other half the next year.
    • Students are expected to complete all the modules in this 28-month period. The teaching periods are structured to deliver core modules in a sequence which permits engagement by part-time students alongside full-time students.
    • The dissertation project is undertaken by part-time students in their second year.

    Teaching takes place on one full day per week (with the possibility of some modules, such as elective modules, taking place on a different day). If studying alongside paid work, we recommend you ask your employer for at least 2 days per week to attend classes and for independent study.

    Part-time students spend four hours per week in lectures and two hours per week in seminars and tutorials.

    • Inclusive Design (15 credits)

      This module will introduce you to the concepts and processes of inclusive design, which will enable you to create designs and carry out evaluations for accessibility. You learn the needs of and assistive technology for people with different special needs

    • Understanding User Interactions (15 credits)

      In this module you learn to plan, conduct and analyse observations of complex user interactions with interactive systems and propose implications and questions for HCI design and evaluation as a result of applying key theoretical approaches.

    • Evaluating Interactive Systems (15 credits)

      This module will provide you with detailed knowledge of evaluation techniques and expose you to the latest developments of user experience of interactive technologies.

    • Interaction Design (15 credits)

      This module provides you with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective interaction design. You will learn the key concepts and theoretical foundations of human-computer interaction (HCI), as well as techniques for the design and evaluation of interactive systems.

    • Research Methods in Human-Computer Interaction (15 credits)

      This module aims to equip you with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to plan and conduct rigorous HCI research and to consider relevant ethical, legal, social and professional issues that impact on research.

    • Information Architecture (15 credits)

      This module will equip you with an understanding and practical experience of the value of information architecture in ensuring digital information environments are easy to navigate, well-labelled, well-organised and user-friendly.

    • Design Justice (15 credits)

      This module will provide students with the knowledge and skills to conduct design that is driven by a social justice agenda. Students will engage with themes including environmental sustainability, fairness, equality, and social cohesion.

    Elective modules

    • Web Design and Development (15 credits)

      This module addresses the practical and theoretical aspects of design and development of responsive websites. In this module, you will learn to create responsive websites by making numerous web technologies work together.

    • Creativity in Design (15 credits)

      This module will provide you with advanced knowledge of creativity and innovation techniques, tools and technologies in the context of designing socio-technical systems and services.

    • Data Visualisation (15 credits)

      This module is designed to equip you with the technical and design skills to create and use data visualization applications for the workplace and research environments.

    • Virtual Reality Design and Development (15 credits)

      This module will introduce students to the foundations of designing and developing immersive experiences with a focus on Virtual Reality.

    Dissertation

    • Individual Project (60 credits)

      This module is a self-directed study, which offers you the opportunity to clearly identify a problem or requirement, justify why it is worth exploring or implementing, develop a method suitable for the work, apply this method, analyse the results and evaluate their implications.

    Teaching and assessment

    Teaching

    Your course will be delivered through a combination of lectures, online activities, workshops and tutorials as well as undertaking an independent project.

    Throughout your MSc you’ll learn from distinguished academics who all have a passion for user-centred design.

    You’ll also benefit from our close links with industry. This includes industry professionals helping shape the curriculum, setting briefs for assessments, and being involved in teaching and learning. They offer guidance as well on design outputs and module content ensuring that you are learning the right skills and knowledge valued by the industry for your future career.

    Additionally you will have the option to attend practitioner seminars. In the past, these have featured HCI/UX experts from prestigious companies, such as Foolproof, Futureheads, Google and eBay. You will also be invited to our HCI research seminar series, and other optional activities (e.g. user research boot camps in City Interaction Lab).

    Assessment

    Your course will be assessed in various ways, including coursework, exams and an independent research project (dissertation). Coursework ranges from written reports and essays, to posters, presentations and design documentation - e.g. wireframe prototypes). Most coursework is individual, but there is also some groupwork – often set around realistic design projects.

    Scholarships worth £2,000 are offered to outstanding postgraduate students, who are applying for a course in Computer Science or Engineering. You do not need to make a separate application. You will be automatically considered based on your master’s programme application form with your personal statement, and your supporting documents.

    For September 2025 intake, the deadline for receipt of applications for consideration for these Scholarships is 30 April 2025.

    You can apply for the Global STEM Leadership Masters Scholarship, which could cover up to 75% of your tuition fees. The scholarships are available to students from the UK and overseas, including from the EU.

      • An upper second-class honours degree in any subject, the equivalent from an international institution or three-plus years of UX-related industry experience
      • A practical background in computing technologies is useful, but not essential
      • Previous experience in Human-Computer Interaction or User Experience Design is not necessary

    If you are an applicant whose first language is not English, the following qualifications are required:

    You will be expected to submit the following:

    • Please include a detailed personal statement (approx. 2 pages) explaining why you are interested in the field of HCI/UX and the MSc HCI Design programme at City, University of London. In your personal statement, explain:
      • What about the nature or content of the field of HCI interests you and what aspects of the programme interest you;
      • How your background and previous experience (e.g. work or study experience) will equip you to study the programme;
      • How you hope the programme will support your future career progression.
