    Benefits of this course

    You will develop skills as a multimedia journalist by telling stories about business, finance and the economy.

    We will give you the professional skills and knowledge needed to work in fast-paced multimedia newsrooms around the world.

    Studying the financial sector in London will give you a unique insight into global business, while funded study trips - usually to New York and Shanghai, will help you get to grips with global economics and stock markets such as the Hang Seng Index and Wall Street.

    Who is this course for?

    If you want to make a difference in the world of journalism, the MA Global Financial Journalism is for you.

    The course will equip you for a varied career, from breaking important stories on global finance and writing about consumer affairs to covering some of the largest companies and financial markets and conducting in-depth investigations.

    You may have no background in finance but wish to specialise and discover great stories. Or you may have a finance or economics background and want to learn much more about journalism.

    As well as developing skills in reporting and writing for digital and print publications, you will gain experience in producing journalism for TV and handling data stories.

    • Journalism Portfolio (30 credits)

      In this module you will acquire the technical and professional capacity to work effectively as a journalist. You will develop entrepreneurial skills to operate as a freelancer and to position yourself in the industry. 

    • Editorial Production (30 credits)

      You will develop practical competence in a range of editorial practices, and broaden your understanding of management skills required to work in the media industry. 

    • Journalism Ethics (15 credits)

      This module will support you in placing journalism practices, processes and products in their wider contexts, enabling you to be an ethical and reflexive practitioner. You will have the opportunity to explore ethical issues as they affect journalists, including yourself.

    • Fundamentals of Financial Journalism (15 credits)

      This module will provide you with an informed understanding of the requirements of financial journalism. You will receive insight into the key economic and financial issues that will help inform your coverage.

    • Reporting the Global Economy (15 credits)

      This module will provide you with an understanding of the coverage of business, economics and finance. You will gain an insight into the world financial system and how they are changing amid events such as the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change. 

    • Companies and Markets for Journalists

      This module aims to, provide you with an informed understanding of the requirements of coverage of business activities to a professional level, draw on your own experience, knowledge and ethical awareness in practical assignments and provide you with an opportunity for critical reflection on practice.

    Elective modules

    Choose two or three depending on how many core electives you have chosen

    • UK Media Law (15 credits)

      You will learn the most important parts of UK law that affect journalism, and how to apply them. We will look at (amongst others) defamation, privacy and data protection, contempt of court, reporting restrictions, and copyright.

    • Data Visualisation & Communication (15 credits)

      Taken after term one Data Journalism, this module goes deeper into the visualisation process and introduces industry-standard coding libraries including D3.js and R's ggplot.

    • Lifestyle Specialism (15 credits)

      This specialism explores a wide range of subject matter, including food, travel, fashion, well-being and real-life, as well as analysing broader themes in modern culture.  

    • Arts & Culture Specialism (15 credits)

      You’ll tackle pitching, reviewing, interviewing, profiling and commentary in the fields of cinema, theatre, music (pop and classical), books and contemporary cultural issues.  

    • Humanitarian Reporting Specialism (15 credits)

      Topics covered include International Aid, protection of children and vulnerable adults, reporting at home and in the field, and disaster reporting. 

    • Finance & Business Specialism (15 credits)

      This module shows you how to cut through jargon, help you understand numbers, find new sources and develop ways to scrutinise government and business failures and success.

    • Sports Specialism (15 credits)

      The specialism will cover the key elements of sports journalism: live events, interviews, press conferences, features and news reporting. You will learn about the craft as well as the art of sports writing. 

    • Political Reporting Specialism (15 credits)

      Learn how political reporters go about their daily duties and how they interact with politicians, spin doctors and special advisers as well as political parties, pressure groups, think tanks, lobbyists and pollsters.  

    • Popular Culture Specialism (15 credits)

      Style and writing are at the heart of the course. It includes how to interview as well as feature writing, reviewing (TV, music, film, theatre, books), and investigative reporting. 

    • Reporting the Middle East Specialism (15 credits)

      This module provides you an opportunity to explore political and media issues in and around the Middle East. It will focus on the contemporary Middle East and on the various ways of thinking about, analysing and reporting on or from that region. 

    • Security & Crime Specialism (15 credits)

      Learn how to report on UK based terrorism - from MI5 to the extremists themselves. On crime it covers all the angles – the police, criminals, crime trends, courts, and how to cover a breaking story. 

    • Investigative Reporting Specialism (15 credits)

      You will learn how to sift the internet alongside more traditional techniques of developing and maintaining contacts, interviewing sources and analysing documents to develop original, ground-breaking stories.  

    • Health and Science Specialism (15 credits)

      This module gives you a thorough grounding in how to report on topics such as technological advances and the challenges presented by artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, climate change and Covid-19. 

    • Audio Production (Podcasting) (15 credits)

      This module is designed to enable you to plan, develop and produce a professional quality podcast, working in groups. You will deepen your understanding and experience of key approaches, processes and decision-making, and of the importance of podcasts in journalism. 

    • Reporting North America Specialism (15 credits)

      This module is designed to enable you to deepen your understanding and experience of reporting on North America as a correspondent. You will analyse the role and practices of specialist journalists covering North America, and plan, develop and produce journalistic reports about the area. 

    • Film, TV, Video and Radio Specialism (15 credits)

      You will learn how the entertainment journalism industry works, from PRs and junkets to premieres and profiles. Alongside studying how to write great news, reviews and interviews and interrogating movies, shows and artists, you’ll explore some of the fascinating analytical and investigative longform writing currently happening in this space.

    • Data Journalism (15 credits)

      This module introduces data journalism skills, with a focus on getting and telling original stories from datasets. There's a strong focus on getting the data before preparing it for visualisation as part of the story-telling process.

    • Journalism Innovation (15 credits)

      This module will enable you to bring fresh thinking to a media organisation; create dynamic content for a start-up media enterprise; or launch your own journalistic product. Working in small groups, you will research, develop, refine and pitch an innovative journalistic idea that showcases your creativity, talents and market acuity.

    • Reporting on Identity and Underrepresented Communities (15 credits)

      We’ll cover techniques and tools essential to reporting on stories related to race, gender, LGBTQ+ communities, class, disabilities and other underrepresented groups.

    Dissertation

    • Final Project (30 credits)

      An opportunity to put everything you have learned on the course into practice. Covering a topic of your choice you will produce a longform piece of journalism, appropriate to your pathway, that will demonstrate your newsgathering, research, interview, writing, technical and presentational skills. You will be taught through one to one supervisions.

    Teaching and assessment

    The course is delivered by a wide range of journalism professionals who have worked as columnists, editors and broadcasters.

    Guest lectures are also delivered by renowned economists from Bayes Business School and elsewhere and guest speakers are invited from across the industry.

    You will work on live online production days and produce a television news programme.

    Your learning activities will include lectures, practical work in groups and individually, personal tutorials, and independent learning.

    Visiting lecturers

    The following is a list of our visiting lecturers for the academic year 2023/24:

    Visiting Professor Jane Fuller is co-director of the Centre for the Study of Financial Innovation, an independent think-tank. A former financial editor and Lex writer at the Financial Times, she still trains its journalists. Jane is also director of the Wincott Foundation, which promotes high-quality economic, financial and business journalism.

    Mike Dolan is Reuters Editor-at-Large for Finance and Markets and has worked as an editor, correspondent and columnist at Reuters for the past 26 years, specialising in global economics, policymaking and financial markets across the G7 and emerging economies.

    Hannah Cogan is a producer and journalist of current affairs and factual programming and has created programmes for Channel 4, BBC1, National Geographic and Netflix. She is highly experienced in investigative journalism, working with financial and economic data, including corporate and public sector accounts.

    Jenna Corderoy is an investigative journalist for openDemocracy. She is one of the UK’s foremost journalistic experts on using access to information laws and is an author of a handbook on subject access requests. Jenna has also written for VICE News and Finance Uncovered and her work has been long and shortlisted for the Paul Foot Award and the PressGazette British Journalism Awards.

    Francesco Guerrera is global economics editor at Reuters Breakingviews. He has worked in London, Brussels, Asia and New York and held senior positions at the Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal and has also run media businesses with multi-million-pound revenues.

    • UK

      Applicants should hold an upper second class honours degree or the equivalent from an internationally recognised institution. Consideration will also be given to mature applicants with substantial work experience in radio and/or television journalism.

      Prerequisites

      • You should hold an upper second class honours degree or the equivalent from an international institution. Applicants that are below an upper second class degree can still apply. You may be asked to attend an interview before admission to the programme. For overseas students, this will normally be done by telephone or Skype.
      • Rolling Admissions: students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to the course. This is a small course and places can fill up quickly. There is a rolling admission policy and students will normally be given a decision within four weeks of application. Interviews, either in person or by telephone, may be required.

      Other Suitable Qualifications

      As well as new graduates, we also welcome mature applicants with substantial work experience.

    English language requirements

    If you're a national of a recognised majority English-speaking country as defined by the government, or have previously completed a university degree (or equivalent) in one, you will not need to prove your knowledge of English to apply for the course.

    Please note that if your country is not defined as majority-English-speaking by the government you will need to demonstrate you meet the English language requirements for the course.

    This course requires the equivalent of an IELTS academic test with an overall score of 7.0 with no less than 7.0 in the writing subtest and no less than 6.5 in any other subtest.

    Application process

    To apply for this course, please fill out your application online and upload all relevant documents, including:

    • Personal Statement – outlining why you wish to take this particular course. You may wish to explain how the course will feed into your future career plans and/or your research interests. You could describe any relevant professional or academic experience you currently have, and explain how it informs your intentions to study. You will need to make sure your statement is specific to our course and institution, and not generic. You may be asked to provide further details if your statement is too generic. For this course, you must provide details of your work experience in journalism and/or the financial sector. Applicants should be able to demonstrate commitment to journalism through relevant work experience.
    • Degree Transcript/Provisional Transcript – For any and all completed degree courses, we need your final transcript of marks with a clear overall grade. If you have not yet finished your course, please provide a provisional transcript of marks received to date. If your transcript is not in English, please provide an official translation as well as the original documents.
    • A 250-word article on a topic of your choice in business or financial journalism. It should be based on your own personal investigation and include an interview with someone relevant to your chosen topic.
    • A copy of your CV with your work experience in journalism clearly highlighted.
    • A copy of your valid passport.
    • Accepted proof of English Language Proficiency if required.
    • If you are an overseas applicant, a completed Immigration History Form along with any current or past UK visas you may hold, and/or biometric residency cards.

    If you do not include all the necessary documents listed above your application may be returned to you and the admission process could be delayed.
