    You will benefit from the global perspectives of crime, deviance and criminal justice systems presented in this MSc.

    Integral to our inquiries thus are cultural narratives and social reactions. We believe that a multi-dimensional approach to the phenomena of crime and deviance that considers the offender, the victim and the familial and social networks that are integral to such behaviours and the responses they elicit is key to our teaching.

    Who is this course for?

    If you are an independent thinker who wants to work within criminal justice, or perhaps already does, this degree is ideal. You can undertake specific research that builds on undergraduate criminology degrees taken anywhere in the world.

    An interest in data collection and analysis will also be useful as research methods form a key component of the programme.

    You might have a background in science, humanities or law, and you might already be working in the criminal justice system.

    • two 30-credit and one 15-credit compulsory core modules
    • one 15-credit core elective module

    • Analysing Criminal Behaviour (15 credits)

      This module will introduce you to the main theoretical perspectives used in criminology and will provide you with the conceptual knowledge to formulate a critical understanding of developments in crime and crime control.

    • Criminal Justice and Penality (15 credits)

      This module focuses on the formulation of crime and justice policy within Britain. It will take you through the main areas of criminal justice policy and highlight the political climates when key developments in the criminal justice system occurred.

    • Research Design, Methods and Methodology (15 credits)

      This module will provide you with a broad overview and understanding of a range of methodological approaches to empirical research, their characteristics, strengths and limitations, and the processes involved in putting them into practice

    Core elective modules

    • Violence: Global Issues (15 credits)

      This module is intended to a) develop an applied understanding of the criminal mind at work in the context of extreme human violence and b) to outline the parameters of the emerging psycho-social field of ’de-humanisation’ studies.

    • Victims: Policy and Politics (15 credits)

      This module enables you to analyse the ways in which crime victims, processes of criminal victimisation, and criminal justice responses are defined, administered, evaluated and reformed within the wider contexts of politics and policy formation.

    • Crime, Media and Culture (15 credits)

      This module analyses key interconnected issues including media proliferation, newsworthiness, moral panics, penal populism, scandal, media driven justice campaigning and ‘popular criminology’. This analysis is situated within wider socio-cultural, political, economic and moral contexts, focusing in particular on their interaction in the 21st Century digitalised media landscape.

    • Qualitative Research Methods (15 credits)

      This module provides you with an opportunity to gain knowledge of qualitative methods and the means to critically evaluate qualitative research. It will provide an understanding of the range of ways in which qualitative research is designed and carried out.

    • Global Crime (15 credits)

      In this module you will examine the extent, nature and complexity of global crime. Using real world events, you will critically consider how different states deal with ‘the problem of crime’.

    Elective modules

    • Digital Data Politics (15 credits)

      This module will take you into a multidisciplinary examination of the politics of digital data. It will examine the actors, organisations, practices and computational features that co-produce, negotiate and contest datafication.

    • Digital Cultures and Everyday Life (15 credits)

      This module will explore the sorts of roles new communication technologies—and in particular digital media, social media, and the Internet—play in the transformation of cultural, economic, political, and social structures and practices. You will review the key theoretical debates around new media and critically evaluate the claims being made about their influence and impact.

    • Advocacy in the Criminal Trial (15 credits)

      In this module you will look critically at the interactions between the decision-makers in the criminal justice system and the advocates who appear before them. You will investigate the ways in which advocates prepare for trial, communicate with witnesses, construct and present persuasive arguments for use before judges and juries.

    • Forensic Psychology for the Criminal Practitioner (15 credits)

      This module will enable you to gain a critical insight into how experienced practitioners work in the criminal courts, and how to prepare for and implement the questioning of witnesses, with an emphasis on potentially vulnerable witnesses.

    Dissertation

    • Dissertation (60 credits)

      This module will provide you with the opportunity to acquire the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to enable you to design, conduct and present research in a chosen topic within your field of sociology.

    Teaching and assessment

    In the first and second term from September to April, you will learn through lectures, interactive workshops and seminars.

    This is supported by insight from visitors such as external criminologists or practitioners. You can ask questions, debate ideas and present your own evidence around particular arguments.

    We encourage you to use the dissertation research to explore specialist areas of criminal justice and network with useful contacts.

    London is an ideal environment to seek out respected relevant institutions and initiatives.

    Most modules are assessed by coursework but the opportunity to study modules outside the department can involve different assessment methods.

    Our course has an emphasis on theoretical analysis and methodological training, allowing you to research the significance of a crime and identify how it might mark social and institutional change.

    English language requirements

    If you're a national of a recognised majority English-speaking country as defined by the government, or have previously completed a university degree (or equivalent) in one, you will not need to prove your knowledge of English to apply for the course.

    Please note that if your country is not defined as majority-English-speaking by the government you will need to demonstrate you meet the English language requirements for the course.

    This course requires the equivalent of an IELTS academic test with an overall score of 6.5 and a minimum of 6.0 in each subtest.

    We will also accept an equivalent score in any of the tests listed under the English language requirements section.

    You must have completed the qualification no more than two years prior to the start of the course.

    Application process

    When applying, you will be expected to provide:

    • A completed application form
    • A certified copy of your undergraduate academic results and degree certificate. If you have not yet finished your course, please provide a provisional transcript of marks received to date. You will be required to send us your degree transcript as soon as it is available.
    • Proof of English proficiency (if required; see English language requirements)
    • Personal statement of up to 500 words on your academic and relevant professional experience to date and how it informs your intentions to undertake this course. In addition, you may wish to outline your vision for how the degree will feed into your research or professional career. You will need to make sure your statement is specific to our course and institution, and not generic. You may be asked to provide further details if your statement is too generic.

    Academic references are not required when you submit your application. However, the admissions tutor may request them at a later date to help make a decision on your application.
