    Our industry-focused course, equipped with cutting-edge, professional standard facilities, is perfect for graduates who aspire to become versatile broadcast journalists.

    If you have a strong passion for television, radio, social and digital news, and podcasting, this is the place for you.

    You'll dive into the world of news, sport, entertainment, lifestyle, and politics, building on your existing knowledge and interests to become a well-rounded professional in the industry.

    Master of Arts (MA)

    Duration:

    MA is comprised of:

    • Core modules, including dissertation (150 credits)
    • Elective (optional) modules (30 credits).

    Core modules

    Through all core modules you will develop the Graduate Attributes, five core skillsets that will help you launch a successful, fulfilling career. Find out more about the Graduate Attributes.

    • Journalism Ethics (15 credits)

      This module will support you in placing journalism practices, processes and products in their wider contexts, enabling you to be an ethical and reflexive practitioner. You will have the opportunity to explore ethical issues as they affect journalists, including yourself.

    • Newsgathering for TV & Radio (30 credits)

      In this module you have the opportunity to demonstrate decision making, judgement and evaluation of newsgathering practice and news stories. You will also be able to distinguish news sources and appreciate their complexity and relevance to a variety of communities. 

    • Newsdays and Longer Form Production (30 credits)

    • UK Media Law (15 credits)

      You will learn the most important parts of UK law that affect journalism, and how to apply them. We will look at (amongst others) defamation, privacy and data protection, contempt of court, reporting restrictions, and copyright.

    • Political Headlines (15 credits)

      In this module you will explore the characteristics of politics and political structures in the UK – what politicians do and say – and how journalists make stories out of them.

    • Studio Production (15 credits)

    Elective modules

    • Data Journalism (15 credits)

      This module introduces data journalism skills, with a focus on getting and telling original stories from datasets. There's a strong focus on getting the data before preparing it for visualisation as part of the story-telling process.

    • Journalism Innovation (15 credits)

      This module will enable you to bring fresh thinking to a media organisation; create dynamic content for a start-up media enterprise; or launch your own journalistic product. Working in small groups, you will research, develop, refine and pitch an innovative journalistic idea that showcases your creativity, talents and market acuity.

    • Lifestyle Specialism (15 credits)

      This specialism explores a wide range of subject matter, including food, travel, fashion, well-being and real-life, as well as analysing broader themes in modern culture.  

    • Arts & Culture Specialism (15 credits)

      You’ll tackle pitching, reviewing, interviewing, profiling and commentary in the fields of cinema, theatre, music (pop and classical), books and contemporary cultural issues.  

    • Humanitarian Reporting Specialism (15 credits)

      Topics covered include International Aid, protection of children and vulnerable adults, reporting at home and in the field, and disaster reporting. 

    • Finance & Business Specialism (15 credits)

      This module shows you how to cut through jargon, help you understand numbers, find new sources and develop ways to scrutinise government and business failures and success.

    • Sports Specialism (15 credits)

      The specialism will cover the key elements of sports journalism: live events, interviews, press conferences, features and news reporting. You will learn about the craft as well as the art of sports writing. 

    • Political Reporting Specialism (15 credits)

      Learn how political reporters go about their daily duties and how they interact with politicians, spin doctors and special advisers as well as political parties, pressure groups, think tanks, lobbyists and pollsters.  

    • Popular Culture Specialism (15 credits)

      Style and writing are at the heart of the course. It includes how to interview as well as feature writing, reviewing (TV, music, film, theatre, books), and investigative reporting. 

    • Reporting the Middle East Specialism (15 credits)

      This module provides you an opportunity to explore political and media issues in and around the Middle East. It will focus on the contemporary Middle East and on the various ways of thinking about, analysing and reporting on or from that region. 

    • Security & Crime Specialism (15 credits)

      Learn how to report on UK based terrorism - from MI5 to the extremists themselves. On crime it covers all the angles – the police, criminals, crime trends, courts, and how to cover a breaking story. 

    • Investigative Reporting Specialism (15 credits)

      You will learn how to sift the internet alongside more traditional techniques of developing and maintaining contacts, interviewing sources and analysing documents to develop original, ground-breaking stories.  

    • Health and Science Specialism (15 credits)

      This module gives you a thorough grounding in how to report on topics such as technological advances and the challenges presented by artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, climate change and Covid-19. 

    • Audio Production (Podcasting) (15 credits)

      This module is designed to enable you to plan, develop and produce a professional quality podcast, working in groups. You will deepen your understanding and experience of key approaches, processes and decision-making, and of the importance of podcasts in journalism. 

    • Reporting North America Specialism (15 credits)

      This module is designed to enable you to deepen your understanding and experience of reporting on North America as a correspondent. You will analyse the role and practices of specialist journalists covering North America, and plan, develop and produce journalistic reports about the area. 

    • Film, TV, Video and Radio Specialism (15 credits)

      You will learn how the entertainment journalism industry works, from PRs and junkets to premieres and profiles. Alongside studying how to write great news, reviews and interviews and interrogating movies, shows and artists, you’ll explore some of the fascinating analytical and investigative longform writing currently happening in this space.

    • From Pitch to Product (15 credits)

    • Reporting on Identity and Underrepresented Communities (15 credits)

      We’ll cover techniques and tools essential to reporting on stories related to race, gender, LGBTQ+ communities, class, disabilities and other underrepresented groups.

    Dissertation

    • Final Project (30 credits)

      An opportunity to put everything you have learned on the course into practice. Covering a topic of your choice you will produce a longform piece of journalism, appropriate to your pathway, that will demonstrate your newsgathering, research, interview, writing, technical and presentational skills. You will be taught through one to one supervisions.

    Teaching and assessment

    You will learn practical and core journalism skills in groups of 15 and upwards through lectures, workshops and broadcast-simulated news days.

    Some modules are held in lecture theatres but most involve small-group workshops allowing you to develop journalistic skills and knowledge.

    Your coursework will be journalistic assignments produced to a deadline, as you would work in a real news organisation.

    You will be assessed by coursework, practical work in groups and individually, a written timed test, essays and a final project.

    The course is delivered by a wide range of professionals in their field who have worked across radio and television.

    We have also welcomed visiting lecturers from across the industry.

    Visiting lecturers

    The following is a list of our visiting lecturers for the academic year 2023/24:

    Dr Chris Birkett is the former executive editor of Sky News and managing editor of BBC News 24. At the heart of many of the biggest television news stories for more than two decades, he won an International Emmy Award as executive producer of Sky News coverage of the London terror attacks of 2005 and a Royal Television Society Award in for his role in negotiating the historic first UK prime ministerial election debates in 2010. The only broadcast journalist to have edited UK general election night programmes on both national radio (BBC 1997) and television (Sky 2005), Chris also produced election-night coverage of every US Presidential election from 1992-2012. He received his PhD, in US history, from King’s College London in 2022.

    Annabel Deegan is a Senior Communications and Media Consultant specialising in writing, storytelling, coaching and providing strategic advice. Annabel worked in TV and digital journalism for 18 years, most recently as Executive Editor for the "Amanpour" programme on CNN International and PBS, hosted by Chief International Anchor Christiane Amanpour. Annabel began her career as a Broadcast Journalist at ITN, writing and reporting for various digital clients. She is a proud City University Journalism post-graduate alumna!

    John Collins is a freelance radio journalist with 20+ years in industry and over a decade in HE. A former newsreader/reporter for Heart, Capital, and LBC, he’s also commentated on football, cricket, and horse racing for local and national BBC services. He’s previously taught for Nottingham Trent University, the University of North Texas, Toronto’s Humber College in Toronto, and the Communication University of China in Beijing. He’s the co-author of the latest edition of Routledge's The Radio Handbook and teaches British Journalism, Culture & Society for Boston University.

    Tim Gatt is a multiplatform media consultant who has worked in senior roles in journalism, government digital communications and digital consultancy. He began his career as a Sky News trainee, working on all different news programmes, before leading the digital output at ITV News and then running the Sun’s website. He specialises in closer working and collaboration between TV, radio, press and digital, and innovating in storytelling on social channels. He is also a regular judge on digital categories at the RTS news awards.

    Tom Croasdell is a freelance newsreader, who can regularly be heard across the country on some of UK’s biggest radio brands including Heart, Capital, Radio X, Smooth, Times Radio, Talk Radio and Talk Sport. He also presents on the rolling news station, LBC News. Previously, Tom worked as a producer on the BBC News Channel and BBC Radio 5 Live and has also taught audio and TV on the Multimedia Journalism MA at Bournemouth University.

    Visiting Professor Barney Jones started a new award winning political programme in the 1990's - Breakfast with Frost - anchored by David Frost, then launched The Andrew Marr Show. Earlier in his career he worked a producer at Newsnight, and BBC Breakfast News, and ran Election coverage at the BBC.

    Matt Capon is a freelance video journalist, photographer and social media specialist. He has worked for the Daily Mirror, the Daily Express, The Daily Star, The Independent, and the London Evening Standard and also worked Jeremy Vine Show on Channel 5 as an assistant producer. He currently works as a freelance video producer for ITN Productions.

    Fernando Pizarro has been a correspondent, editor, producer, and manager in the UK and US. His most recent experience is as a supervising editor at NPR. Previously he was senior editor at The New York Times Audio. He won multiple Emmy awards and nominations for his work as a Congress and White House correspondent in the U.S. He was a correspondent, anchor and producer for Univision, ESPN, CNN, and NBC. He has been a lecturer at City teaching broadcasting, podcasting, Reporting North America, and Reporting underserved communities since 2022. He has been an adjunct lecturer at American University in Washington D.C., The University of Houston, and the Universidad del Desarrollo in Santiago de Chile.

    Paul Waters is an award-winning BBC producer and the co-presenter of the We’d Like A Word books and authors podcast, which was shortlisted for 2020 Books Podcast of theYear. Paul grew up in Belfast during ‘the Troubles’, was involved in cross-community peace groups and went on to report and produce for BBC Northern Ireland, BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio 5 Live, the BBC World Service and Channel 5. His claim to fame is making Pelé his dinner; but Paul has also covered elections in the USA, created an alternative G8 Summit in a South African township, gone undercover in Zimbabwe, conducted football crowds, reported from Swiss drug shooting-up rooms, smuggled a satellite dish into Cuba to produce the first BBC live programmes from the island and produced the World Service’s first live coverage of the 9/11 attacks on America.

    We encourage our journalism students to gain journalism experience during their studies. Professional experience is an important step in developing a career in journalism as it helps students put their learning into practice and make contacts in the industry.

    It is a BJTC requirement that students on MA Television Journalism and MA Broadcast Journalism complete 15 days of work experience.

      Applicants should hold an upper second class honours degree, or the equivalent from an internationally recognised institution. Consideration may also be given to mature applicants with substantial work experience in radio and/or television journalism.

      All complete applications will be considered and shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an interview.

      Pre-requisites

      Applicants must demonstrate a knowledge of TV and/or radio news and current affairs. We expect a high standard of general knowledge relating to politics, international news, sport and entertainment.

      Other suitable qualifications

      As well as new graduates, we also welcome applications from mature applicants with substantial work experience in radio and/or television journalism.

    English language requirements

    If you're a national of a majority English-speaking country, or have previously completed a university degree (or equivalent) in one, you will not need to prove your knowledge of English to apply for the course.

    The government provides a list of recognised majority English-speaking countries.

    Otherwise, to participate fully in the collaborative learning process in the School of Communication & Creativity, you must provide evidence that you meet the courses English language requirements.

    This course requires the equivalent of an IELTS academic test with an overall score of 7.0 with no less than 7.0 in the writing subtest and no less than 6.5 in any other subtest.

    We will also accept an equivalent score in any of the tests listed under the English language requirements section.

    You must have completed the qualification no more than two years prior to the start of the course.

    To apply for this course, please fill out your application online and upload all relevant documents, including:

    • Personal statement - outlining why you wish to take this particular course. You may wish to explain how the course will feed into your future career plans and/or your research interests. You could describe any relevant professional or academic experience you currently have, and explain how it informs your intentions to study. You will need to make sure your statement is specific to our course and institution, and not generic. You may be asked to provide further details if your statement is too generic.
    • Degree Transcript/Provisional Transcript – For any and all completed degree courses, we need your final transcript of marks with a clear overall grade. If you have not yet finished your course, please provide a provisional transcript of marks received to date. If your transcript is not in English, please provide an official translation as well as the original documents.
    • A copy of your valid passport.
    • Accepted proof of English Language Proficiency if required.
    • If you are an overseas applicant, a completed Immigration History Form [DOCX] along with any current or past UK visas you may hold, and/or biometric residency cards.
